My dog coughs when barking, but seems okay. Does she need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 56 lbs

Hello, my dog delilah began coughing a few days ago. She was coughing a lot that night, then the next day it was better. Every day since it's improved and now it only happens when she's barking or howling. She's eating, drinking, pooping, and playing and acting perfectly normal. She also is swallowing and licking her lips after the cough too. She has taken two antibiotics in the past few months for different issues so I really don't want to have to give them again.

Since it's resolving on it's own without treatment, I'd recommend just continuing to monitor things and take her to her vet if she starts to get worse again. She may have just had a mild cold or kennel cough, but it sounds like she's well on the mend.
