Why does my dog suddenly pull on the leash when we walk in new areas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 months and 9 days old | 115 lbs

My dog gets very distracted when walking and still will walk by my side and it can be loose at first. But i noticed that slowly as we start walking in new areas or even area we’ve been it but don’t go often i feel a sudden strain on the leash and he isn’t trying to walk in front of me he’s still beside me but it’s a slight pull. I don’t want this turning into a habit that i can’t control. He sits when i stop walking and stand still sometimes but how can I stop this suddenly.

It sounds like Bear is developing some anxiety about walking for some reason. If you're pulling on his leash, correcting him, speaking to him in a frustrated way in any manner, stop all that immediately. It may also be nothing that you're doing and just genetics coming in to play. I recommend bringing really special treats on your walks and keeping him happy and relaxed with those. Plan on continuing this for a few weeks to a few months. If that doesn't work, I'd highly recommend speaking with a qualified positive-only dog trainer. As a final note, definitely do not use an electric collar on this pup under any circumstances, or you will see worsening of his behavior.
