Why is my senior dog panting, coughing, and bark changed? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old | 60 lbs

My nearly 14 yr old Dobie/Aussie Shep mix is showing some signs that, to this pet Momma, indicate she is coming to the end of her time in this world. She has been excessively panting, off and on regardless of inside/outside or day/night; started about a week ago. Now she has been "coughing" & her bark has changed 100%; was big boisterous & higher pitched is now low raspy and hollow. I am very concerned, whereas my husband is not. Do I need to rush her to a Vet or not?

Yes I would definitely get her in to her vet. Especially being part Doberman, because they are prone to a particular type of heart disease. If she is in heart failure, it's a very uncomfortable condition and you'd either want to get her started on aggressive treatment, or go forward with euthanasia (depending on all sort of factors, including how she's doing overall, cost of medications, your availability to give the medications 2-4 times a day, etc). I wouldn't let her go through tonight without a vet visit if at all possible.
