My dog has a new raised, dime-sized lump on his skin. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 70 lbs

This spot showed up on my 2 year old chow/GSD mix. I just noticed it about 24 hours ago. It does not seem to bother him and he is eating fine. It is a little raised and is about the size of a dime. Any thoughts on what it could be?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Kodak! I would recommend having him examined by his vet. With a lesion like this, we could have a reaction to an insect bite, a bacterial infection, a fungal infection (ringworm https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951439 ), or a growth seen in young dogs called a histiocytoma https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952066 . Ringworm is contagious to people, so it is a good idea to get these lesion examined ASAP and because of this you should be sure to wash your hands after touching the area until you find out the cause.
