My dog is limping, X-rays clear, still in pain. What's the next step?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 11 months and 6 days old | 8.8 lbs

My 8.8 lb 11 month old Yorkie has been favoring his back right leg for a month. He runs on 3 legs. We took him to our vet for xray, nothing showed up, so she sent them to a radiologist who saw nothing definitive. He was given pain killers and anti inflammatory, but still is limping. I have been massaging the area. I don't know what the next step to take would be.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If they are not concerned about a broken bone, it may be a good idea to give Ben some time to rest up to see if this is just a soft tissue injury of some sort. I would give him a few days to a week on the medications and complete rest limiting his activity to see if he improves on his own. If no improvement is seen by then or he worsens in the meantime, have him reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
