My dog had a seizure. Are there natural ways to help control them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 13 years and 8 months old | 18 lbs

I was having new flooring put into my house and my dog begnn to have a seizure. First one she's ever had. I believe the stress of the environment changing caused it. I took her to the vet and he confirmed that she had one. She was having trouble standing and would fall down. That's what the seizure look like. He put her on no meds. She's groggy and I hope she comes around. Is there any herbal medicine that I can give her to help her control seizures?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are no herbs or supplements that are known to be helpful for seizures unfortunately. Also, it is not recommended generally to combined supplements with the regular anti-seizure medications as some of these can interact with the medications. Good news is that usually dogs become more and more tolerant of the anti-seizure medications and become less and less groggy on them as the time goes on. Good luck and have a great day!

Unfortunately, there are no OTC medications that you can give safely. The best you can do is keep him or her confined in a padded crate. Keep him or her away from stairs, windows or balconies to avoid falls. Keep your hands away from the mouth during a seizure. Seek veterinary attention as soon as you can.

I am afraid there are no over the counter medicines that would regulate seizures. Actually the most common seizure medication is phenobarbital, which is a controlled drug, but relatively cheap. Keep a diary of the seizure activity, ie time it starts, ends, date and if it lasts 5 minutes or longer then your dog needs to be seen by a vet right away. Stress reduction may reduce seizure activity.
