Why does my dog's back leg keep hurting on and off? What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old | 11.9 lbs

3yrs ago he hurt back leg. Xrays=ok, vet suspect pulled muscle, got better w/meds & rest. Over 3yr span has hurt it again couple times from jumping but always seemed 2 get better after same treatment. Last few months I noticed when he runs fast & poops he doesnt put weight on it, hard 2 tell but told vet 2day & said she felt a little muscle atrophy.2017 xrays were ok so said we can see ortho in future. Not in pain or limp, but worried. Possible dx? Arthritis? What can i do until seeing ortho?

Hi. Thank you for writing in with a question. This off and on limping could be caused by several things ranging from a soft tissue injury to infection or repeated injuries. I don't know if you were in valley fever heavy areas, but if you are that is a possibility for an off-and-on lameness as well. I would recommend continuing rest and anti-inflammatories prescribed by your veterinarian until you can see the orthopedic specialist. The orthopedic specialist is the best Next Step. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon
