My 1-year-old Lab is bleeding from his penis. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 70 lbs

I have a chocolate lab that turned 1 year old today. I came home from work to find him dripping blood from his penis. What can I do for this? I have some antibiotics that the people I bought him from have me with him. They are cephalexin 500 mg. Should I give him these?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be an infection such as from the urinary tract but this could also be something like a traumatic injury or urinary stones, among many other possibilities that may not need antibiotics. Cephalexin would not be a good antibiotic for this sort of infection in general anyway. I do not recommend that you give the cephalexin without investigating this further. I recommend that you have Charlie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
