Why does my kitten run away and climb dangerously when I pick him up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 2 months and 12 days old

Why does my 11 week old kitten run away from me, up to the top floor of my apartment building then want to jump down from the railing? Does he hate me? Is he suicidal? How do I get him to stop running away when I go to pick him up?

I don't think your kitten is suicidal. It may be that he is very playful, and running away has become a game, or the way you pick him up is painful or hurts him so he is trying to get away. Making sure he is kept somewhere safe where he can't get out onto the balcony or railing and injure himself is best to avoid any harm. When picking him up, scooping him up gently under the belly is a lot more comfortable. If he won't come to you, you can entice him to get used to you by offering a smelly treat he enjoys, then petting him and picking him up once he is calm. A pheromone diffuser such as Comfort Zone may also help if he is stressed or anxious. If he seems painful or in distress, scheduling a vet visit to rule out any issues is also a good idea.
