My female mice fought after cleaning. How to reintroduce them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi! My two female fancy mice have been together for a year now, with no trouble. The occasional spat whenever I clean the cage, but I make sure to put some of the old bedding to keep their scents in there. But I cleaned it tonight and it's been bad. Fighting was nonstop for an hour before I decided to separate them. There was no blood, but there was gonna be some soon. I know I'm supposed to separate for 20 minutes but it's late and I can't do it now. It's been a few hours, what do I do?

I am sorry to hear about your mice! If they are still fighting you can try putting them in cages directly next to eachother or place one in a smaller cage inside the larger cage to allow them to smell/see eachother and get used to eachother again without the possiblity of fighting. Also adding another feeding bowl and water bottle to provide several locations for resources so less likelihood of competition may help.
