My dog ate chicken feathers, now one is sticking out. Is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog 7 months old and is in heat. Recently she has eatten chicken feathers. And today I found a feather sticking out of her rectum. Should I be concerned? I'm thinking this could be dangerous internally for her. She is a mini schnauser.

Hello, thank you for your question. Feather are usually something that can be fairly well digested in the GI tract. If your dog is eating well and continuing to produce normal feces I would not worry about the piece of feather. She will likely pass this on her own. If she begins to strain to defecate or you notice any blood or mucous, I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
