How to prepare for a new husky's first week and prevent barking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 17 days old | 10 lbs

I just got a husky and I was wondering how should I prepare? I'm super nervous because I had a Chihuahua last year and gave it away because he barked too much and I was so sad about it. I don't want to make the same mistake with this husky. What should I do for the first week? All I want for him is to be a chill calm dog that doesn't require an extreme amount of care. I'm willing to do the basics.

Hi there. I'm sorry that you have had to give up a Chihuahua in the past. That is always a very hard decision to make. I'm not sure if you've already gotten the Husky or not, but I can definitely give you my thoughts. Huskies are a very vocal breed so it is possible that this pet will be a barker as well. Huskies need a lot of exercise and will need regular grooming as well. Being a pure breed, they can't have more problems than a mixed breed including allergies, cancers, behavioral issues, and many more. But these things can happen with any pet so it's hard to predict. The basics would be vaccinations, annual examinations, spay or neuter, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm prevention. If you have any other questions or concerns, or any more specifics, feel free to open a consultation. Good luck
