My dog had a long reverse sneeze and looked like she couldn't breathe.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 8 months old | 8.5 lbs

My 8lbs yorkie just had a reverse sneeze at the dog park that lasted 4 minutes or so. I began to panic as it seemed she really couldn't breathe and finally she did a "throwing up" motion and i just heard how air seemed to get through finally. no liquid came out, she didnt throw up anything other than air if that makes sense.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Reverse sneezing can look quite scary at times so I understand your concern. However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues. If this ever seems to affect Diva in any way or if these episodes become too frequent, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment to make sure that this is not anything else more concerning. Good luck and have a great day!
