My dachshund is hunched, crying, and lethargic. Is it neck pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 11 lbs

My 5 y old dachshund has been walking with her head hanging down. She lays around, she cries if you touch her under her mouth/neck area she walks hunched over. She has always been very hyper she loves to stand on her hind legs & jump.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good night!
