My puppy won't eat after tooth extraction. Is she in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Female | unspayed

My 7 month old puppy had her 4 baby canines extracted 5 days ago. Vet gave me Meloxicam to give her everyday but she doesn’t seem like she needs it so it was never used. She hasn’t been eating for a 1.5 days (maybe only nibble only a little) but she would seem her normal playful self. Is she in pain? Should I start giving her Meloxicam as prescribed? Or is she just being picky?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. Not eating can be a sign of pain in a dog. I would start giving her the medication and see if her appetite improves. If not, then she will need to see a veterinarian to determine the cause of her decreased appetite. You can try adding warm water to her dry kibble or you can offer warmed canned food. I hope this information helps!
