Is cannabis safe for my senior dog's limping, arthritis, or anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 years and 8 months old

Toby is now 11 years old and he often struggles with his front left leg. He limps quite badly and I am noty sure if it's the hip or ankle. I read that in Italy they treat arthritis and anxiety etc in dogs with Cannabis. Is this safe and can I try it?

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Toby’s care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. Cannabis has not been tested in dogs for safety and I do not recommend you use this. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
