My dog ate plastic and has bloody mucus stools. Is this an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, we have a pug who keeps on chewing plastics. One time she ate a plug and since then she's been having stools with only mucus and blood. But the thing is, after a while she'd be back to normal but after a few days she'd have the same type of stool. The problem is it's been 3 weeks. She has this type of stool for 2 different days in a week. She doesn't show any signs of weakness but when she produces the mentioned stools, she won't eat but after pooping, she'd have her appetite again.

If your pup has eaten a foreign body such as plastic it is possible she has a partial obstruction which is why she is still able to eat and pass some (soft) stools. It would be best to bring her into a vet ASAP to have her examined for a foreign body or other issues such as GI upset, parasites, illness, etc, so that she can be treated, especially since this issue has been ongoing for weeks.
