Why is my new kitten's skin condition getting worse after vet care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 months and 27 days old | 5.5 lbs

I have taken my new kitten (adopted from humane society) to the vet twice for a skin condition he developed shortly after adoption. Scaling, weeping inner ears and ear-fur loss were the first symptoms. Then hair loss and irritation above the eyes. Now, his neck, back, tail all have scabbing, scaling skin with hair loss. His nose is also dry and looks like it's rotting. He's been treated for ringworm, and given a shot of antibiotics and also a shot of ivermectin. Still getting worse. Help!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cricket. He appears to have been treated for ringworm, a bacterial infection and mites based in the medications you have listed. Has he been tested for any of these conditions? Typically a fungal culture, impression smears and skin scrapes are performed. This will direct treatment. A food allergy should also be considered and he may require a prescription diet trial. A hydrolyzed diet is a one where the protein source is chopped into tiny pieces so that the body's immune system will not recognize it and therefore not react. This would be my next recommendation. I hope this information helps!
