My lovebird is breathing heavy and tail bobbing. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Lovebird | Female | 0.14 lbs

We have a 7 year old fancy lovebird who has started showing distress. She is eating good and her droppings look normal. She weighs 68 grams. She sits and her tail bobs up and down and she seems to have heavy breathing. I have given her Doxycycline for two days and she seems a little better. There is a heating pad on the side of her cage to keep her warm. None of my 18 other birds are showing any symptoms. She is still perching and is vocal. In beginning she was shivering but has now stopped

If Sawyer is still showing problems even with at home treatment, it's best to bring her into your local vet for a complete exam. They can check for infection (which could be causing her symptoms if she's improving with medication), or other underlying issues through an exam and some basic bloodwork especially since the symptoms you mentioned are very vague and can be a part of any number of issues. Keeping her warm and in a hospital cage that is separated from your other birds so they can't pick on her (and no illness can be spread) is also a good idea if she hasn't been already (you didn't specify either way).
