My dog shivers and has soft poop on antibiotics. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 57 lbs

My dog started shivering while inhaling in the middle of the night. I let him out and he had soft mushy poops (not quite diarrhea but close). He was happy and excited as he headed back inside, drank a lot of water and is now comfortable lying down/sleeping with no shivering. Note: he is on medication (antibiotic to kill off bacteria) for a month prior to starting an adult heart worm treatment in about 2 weeks. Should I be concerned about the shivering and diarrhea post shivering?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Meeko! I would watch him. Antibiotics can cause tummy upset that can manifest as belly pain (shivering can be a sign of pain, like cramping), diarrhea and vomiting. He likely had to go to the bathroom as abnormal stool can cause urgency and that is why he was shivering then it stopped after he went. If loose stool persists talk to your Vet about adding in medications like a probiotic, metronidazole or even a special diet. I wish you the best!
