My 11 year old lab had arytenoid laterlization mid september. I still have to soak her food a little to soften it for her to eat. She was on oravet dental chews before surgery for her teeth. I'm worried about giving them to her because of the aspiration risk. Is it ok to give? I have an oral rinse or toothpaste if needed but I worry about aspiration with that too. Are any of these better to do over the other to lessen the risk of aspiration?

Hello, thank you for your question. In general her aspiration risk will be increased secondary to this procedure. I would avoid the oral rinse as this will be easier to aspirate compared to other more solid products. If the toothpaste is used in small amounts she should be able to tolerate this. It should be ok for her to have the chews as well, assuming she does chew them into small pieces and does not swallow them whole (like some labs who are very food motivated). If you believe she has a problem with the chews at any time you could take it away from her. Hope this helps!
