Can I safely bathe my dog after a hospital stay for pneumonia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 2 years and 4 months old | 31 lbs

I just picked up my dog from the hospital after being hospitalized two days for mild dehydration and aspiration pneumonia. They sent him home with antibiotics, anti acid, anti nausea and other meds. I forgot to ask if I could bathe him soon. He arrived smelling like a very smelly dog. He still coughing a little. Any ideas if I should wait or bathe him tomorrow?

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Fabio. It should be alright to give him a bath. I would be extra careful to keep water away from his face and head to prevent him from aspirating any additional water. I would ensure that he is strong enough to stand on his own, as laying in the water could increase his chances of further aspiration. Hope this helps and that Fabio is feeling better!
