My cat's losing hair behind his ear with a scab. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 10 lbs

I’ve been noticing my cat has been losing hair behind his right ear. This has been going of for about a week and a half. There is a little scab in the middle of it. I’m not sure what it is or if I should bring him to the vet to get checked out. I have attached pictures as well. Thank you in advance.

It looks like Apollo has been scratching that area and maybe made a scratch with one of his nails. I would be concerned if he is continuously trying to scratch his ear that he has an ear infection. I would recommend a veterinarian if he is scratching at his ear more recently to have them check his ear out. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
