Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Cow | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 9 days old | 40 lbs

from nepal, south asia hello there, my calf (baby cow) was bitten by a rabies infected dog in the nose. It was given vaccination (three vaccines one after 15 hours other after 3 days and last one after 7 days) . It has been 15 days and now (from today) it has started taking out the tongue, stopped eating and making a certain type of noise often. Has it been infected by rabies? Is it going to die?

Unfortunately this sounds like your calf very likely is infected and the vaccine did not work. Please be careful. Please show your calf to a veterinarian. If the calf has rabies, it will die. Separate the calf from any other cows and animals and do not let anyone handle the calf as the saliva can cause rabies in people, if it gets into a wound or scratch. Please get a a veterinarian out.

Hello. I am extremely worried about you & your cow. Here in the US, we have no such vaccines that are given to animals that have been exposed to rabies. You need to euthanize this cow immediately since she is showing possible signs of rabies & see a doctor immediately in case YOU need post rabies exposure vaccinations. Please do this very soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
