My Chiweenie is squinting with eye discharge. Can I use OTC meds?

Question

my chiweenie has been squinting his left eye. I did get a new area rug which he loves to stretch on. he has been rubbing against furniture. I was able to clean the corner of his eye and got some brownish discharge out. I have some old otc dog eyewash but I don't know if I should use that. I also have some benedryl. Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | 4 years and 3 months old

I would recommend bringing Zac to the veterinarian to have his eye stained. This would look for a scratch or ulcer on the eye. If this is the case he will need drops multiple times a day and an elizabethan collar to help him not to scratch at it. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
