My senior overweight cat has accidents. Can medication help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 7 months old

Hi! My cat is 13 and had always been fine but recently she is having accidents everywhere and my parents say they can’t deal with it anymore as it happens multiple times a week for a few months now and think she needs to be put down but she always seems so healthy! She doesn’t act like an old cat and i feel like it’s a problem we can work out! Please help me! She’s pretty overweight so i thought maybe it’s diabetes or kidney failure but can the accidents be stopped with medication?

These signs may be compatible with either kidney failure or diabetes as you correctly suspected, but urinary inflammation/infection is possible as well. Urinary incontinence is possible but rarer in cats. A physical examination and urine analysis at least are necessary to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
