My temporary cats haven't seen a vet. What checkups are needed?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Hi, I am currently taking care of my friends 2 cats for a few months. One is just about 2 years old, the other is between 7 & 9 years. My friend recently told me the cats haven't been to a vet in years. I am concerned that the cats may need updated vaccinations or other regular preventive checkups to "benchmark" their health to help going forward but I'm unsure what to do from here. Neither cat has its history other than the 2 yr old who was spayed & vaccinated at the shelter. What should I do?

I would follow the owner's wishes. It is good to keep cats updated on vaccines, and rabies vaccines are required by law. If you want to have them examined by a vet and receive appropriate vaccines, the vet can do so without prior records. Annual exams are recommend to monitor changes over time. If the owner decides to continue with regular vet care, then you can transfer the records to the new vet.
