Why does my dog have itchy scabby bumps and excessive shedding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 years and 9 months old | 12 lbs

Within the last 2 weeks. Our 12lb, 8 yr old, house kept rat terrier began shedding excessively now has itchy, scabby bumps that have appeared on his side, under fore leg, along his neck, + ... Countenance remained same - playful, full of energy, appetite not diminished. 2 weeks ago, diarrhea for 2 days but BM's have returned to normal. Does not interact with other animals though other animals do come in the space where he frequents daily. Diagnosed with red mange at 9 weeks. How to treat?

I would recommend that Rosco be examined by a vet to determine the cause so that he can receive appropriate treatment. Possible causes of these lesion and hair loss and itching include fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies (to fleas, foods, or the environment), among others. The vet will do a thorough physical exam and discuss the recent history, and may do skin scrapings or cytology to look for parasites or infection.
