My 8-month-old puppy is weak, vomiting, and diarrhea. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chipoo | Female | 8 months and 22 days old

Hello, Doc. Our 8-month-old dog was very fine until yesterday evening, she was energetic and ate a lot for dinner. When we arrived that same night to our new home, she started looking weak. She did not eat the next day and threw up in the morning. She also had a very wet poop twice and threw up again in the evening. What should we do?

You should have Snow examined by a vet. Common causes of vomiting and diarrhea in a puppy include dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. After a physical exam and review of her medical history, the vet may do a parvo test, blood work, or x-rays to see what could be the cause.

I would recommend that you have your puppy examined by a vet. Vomiting in puppies is common, and can be caused by dietary intolerance or indiscretion (eating something that could get stuck), intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection (such as parvo virus), pancreatitis, among others. After examination and discussing her medical history, the vet may recommend testing for parvo or intestinal parasites. Once they have a better idea as to the cause of the vomiting and poor appetite they can recommend an appropriate treatment.
