My dog's penis is stuck after humping. Is it a medical emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 27 lbs

A friend told me about something that happened at their work. A dog humped another dog and his penis along with testicles,(or more realistically the knot, I think) came out of sheath. Bosses immediately ran dog inside to have his bits put back in. Everyone was very upset and it was said this was a serious medical issue that the dog could die from or have serious health problems. Is this true that it could result in serious problems or death? Thanks

It is normal for the penis and bulbus penis to not be able to be retracted before the swelling has gone down. The bulbus serves to lock the penis in the vagina so it is not able to come out before ejaculation. If the penis does not get locked in the vagina due to the vagina having a too large a diameter then the penis needs to reduce in size to be able to be retracted into the sheath. This is not a medical emergency and it sounds like the owner of the dog over-reacted.
