My dog has a lump. When should I stop watchful waiting for diagnosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 63 lbs

I have a nearly 5 yo ♀ Border-Aussie, spayed at 6 mos. I've been worried about a L sided neck mass behind the ear for ~ 1 yr. Her vet hasn't made a dx but recommended watchful waiting, unless it grows significantly or she becomes sx'atic. She's never been sx'atic. She is a service-dog so her health is of utmost importance. At what point must watchful waiting yield to bx/FNA or even surgical removal?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Gucci! Given that this mass has been there for a year, even though it hasn't grown, and her health is so important, I think it would be fine to have an FNA done on it. It would give you peace of mind knowing what this mass is, and it can be treated if needed. While I agree with your vet that you can wait to see if it grows, I also believe in making the owners feel more comfortable and I think you would feel more comfortable to have a diagnosis of it. You can speak to your vet about having an FNA done on it this week. I hope this helps!
