Could my 6-year-old cat's jumping issues and grumpiness be arthritis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old

My six year old male cat can’t jump the same as he used to, it’s as if he doesn’t have the power in his back legs. He is eating and toileting as normal. When he plays he doesn’t chase the laser/toy and waits for them to pass him so he can try to catch it. His behaviour towards my other two cats has also changed. He has become more grumpy and sort of bully’s them. When I take the litter box to scoop/clean he urinates where it should be although there is other boxes he uses. Any ideas?

it sounds like your kitty may be in pain. This could be from an injury, or arthritis. I suggest you take Felix to your veterinarian for an exam and possibly x-rays. If he has arthritis pain, your vet will likely prescribe meloxicam for him, which is an NASAID which reduces inflammation and pain.

I'm so sorry Felix may be having some trouble. What you are seeing at home certainly can be caused by arthritis. Often cats will be stiff, have difficulty jumping up, and be reluctant to move around because of arthritis. Often these signs are pretty subtle as cats tend to hide their clinical signs of pain. Most cats will not vocalize when they hurt, as a dog sometimes will, so it can be tricky to diagnose. A good examination by your vet may reveal thickened joints or joints that have decreased range of motion. Sometimes we need to take x-rays to better evaluate for arthritis, looking for boney changes in and around the joints. If it is arthritis pain your vet may recommend glucosamine supplements that can be mixed in the food that can help hopefully slow down the progression. If Felix had an injury and is acutely in pain, he may need some pain medication for a few days. I hope Felix is back to his normal self soon!
