My dog won't drink water after surgery. Is this normal or concerning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 7 years and 9 months old | 65 lbs

My dog went under anesthesia for teeth cleaning and dental work. She also had a small tumor removed from her eyelid area. Molly is an otherwise almost 8 year old healthy lab. The operation was 4 days ago. Her appetite is good but she refuses to drink water. She is fed canned dog food which I have started mixing in water. Is this unusual. Should I be concerned?

She may not have a drive to drink if she received iv fluids during her procedures and you are meeting what she needs through her diet. If she is otherwise happy with normal appetite and energy level and no vomiting or diarrhea you can continue monitoring. If any of these change in addition to not drinking then that would be more concerning as dehydration could ensue. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

As long as she is able to completely swallow the water and has no other signs of a fever (lethargy, hot ears, panting, vomiting, restless behaviour) I would not be overly concerned. This may be a side effect of the anaesthetic or even the medication she has been prescribed. Continue to monitor for any additional signs
