My puppy fell, hit throat, dry heaving, struggling to swallow. Is it serious?

My 6mo. Old puppy slipped running up wet carpet stairs. It looked like he hit his throat, he started dry heaving and now struggling to swallow. It's been an hour and he seems better but he still dry heaves when trying to eat and swallow. I'm not sure if his throat is just soar or what. I was running his whole neck, nothing felt broken and it didnt hurt him any. Not sure what to do, just monitor him to see if it still happens?

He likely knocked his throat hard enough that eating or swallowing is irritating the vagus nerve and causes retching. You should monitor this and if it does not get better by tomorrow or if he has breathing problems, he will need to be seen by a veterinarian or at a petER. In the case of respiratory problems this is an emergency and he needs to be seen right away.
