What are these spreading, scabbed sores on my dog's lower belly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 9 months old | 45 lbs

Our dog is a mixed-breed female, about 9 years old who was a stray when we found her at about 3 months old. She developed a sore on her lower abdomen which has spread to be 4 or 5 sores with the original sore being the largest. The larger sores appear to be scabbed. She does not scratch or lick the spots. She takes regular flea and tick meds and we saw no evidence of fleas or ticks. We live in a suburban area. She is occasionally in a kennel.

Hi there. From your photos, it appears that Pepper has some mild infection of her skin. This can be caused by an allergy to something, or allergy to food. Bacteria likes to invade skin that is inflamed and a small infection will develop. I would recommend taking Pepper to you vet for an exam and skin testing. They can identify what is going on and get Pepper the treatment she needs. I hope that helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
