My dog ate grapes days ago, no symptoms. Is kidney damage a risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My dog loves frozen grapes and i just read that it is very dangerous for him to eat them. He isn't showing any symptoms of sickness and the last grape he ate would have been at least 3 days ago. Do I need to worry? Obviously, he won't be eating them again.

Some dogs can eat grapes without getting ill or having kidney failure, others cannot. Next time you visit a veterinarian with Riker have some blood work done to make sure he has healthy kidneys. Should Riker get lethargic, start drinking a lot of water or has diarrhea or vomits. All these could be signs of kidney disease.

It may or may not be related as no one knows the toxic dose of grapes and it can vary between dogs. If there is no change in appetite or an increase in drinking and he is acting normal then you can continue to watch him. If you notice any of those symptoms irnhe continues to vomit then I would get him checked

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Joker. Diarrhea is not a common symptom of kidney disease. It is likely not related to the grape ingestion. Typically a dog with kidney dysfunction will vomit, drink excessive water, refuse food and be lethargic. However, it is best to see his veterinarian for bloodwork so you know for sure and don't have to worry. I hope this information helps!

Grapes toxicity in dogs causes acute kidney failure, the most common symptom of kidney failure is excessive drinking and urination. i strongly recommend taking her to the vet urgently for a urine analysis and blood test in order to assess the potential damage to the kidneys.
