My cat's fur turned white around eye after medicine. Is it permanent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My Siamese 2 year old cat was given terramycin ointment for one eye. After 7 days of use twice a day I noticed that some of her dark hairs around the eye and nose had turned white? Did the medicine cause this? Will the white hair disappear or is it permanent?

There is a possibility that the bacteria or virus that are affecting the eye may have damaged some of the melanin at the base of the hair roots. This may be permanent or not. Time will tell after the hair gets replaced naturally. Terramycin does not usually cause this. There is also a condition called vitiligo that can cause that (Michael Jackson suffered from it). If it is indeed vitiligo the hair will stay white. But it is just a cosmetic condition.
