Why does my cat have black crust and raw skin around her eye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi I noticed recently my cats eye looked very dirty so I wiped her eyes as normal, a couple of days later her left eye had and has a thick black crust around the corner and it literally looks like her skin is a bit raw around it as if somehow it wasn't there before and the black stuff is healing like if a human got a cut and it scabbed over, can you give me any advice or suggestions on what it could be please?

Although a picture of it would help to determine the underlying cause, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
