My dog's c-section incision looks split and irritated. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 109 lbs

My dogs csection incision looks like its split open, its been a week since she had her csection & she had a recheck 3 days later but her incision was fine, but the past couple days Ive noticed its obviously not okay, i was wondering if there’s anything I could do? :( its irritated as well from puppies constantly nursing & needing to eat. Ive done exactly what I was told every day, it looks completely different in person but what should I do? the biggest red part is slightly smaller today :(

You need to take her to your vet to get it checked, it is indeed opened but it is just the skin layer so there is no life threatening condition here but because the puppies are in this area all the time i would recommend having it closed with a few staples by your vet, this can be done without anesthesia.
