Is it normal for a neutered dog to try to mate with a female in heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My male adult dog was nuetered in 2011. I have a female jack Russell that is in heat ,for the first time. Today after arriving home , I found my male dog (nuetered in 2011) attached to my female jack Russell. They were attached bottom to bottom. I struggled with detaching them. Which resulted in pain for the male. Is that normal or possible with a neutered dog of 7 years ?

Neutering doesn't remove all sexual behaviors, and male dogs who are neutered can still try to mate with females in heat. The good news is there is no way your female can get pregnant. The best way to stop that behavior from Jeeps is to have your female spayed. I hope this helps!
