My 6-week-old kitten: dental, deworming, and first vet visit needs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed

My kitten is about 6 weeks old. Should I start dental care? What else do I give her? Can I deworm her at home? Or do I have to take her

Great questions! You can start brushing Bambi's teeth now. I would get a cat toothbrush and cat toothpaste (do NOT use human toothpaste) from the pet store. I recommend the CET brand of dental products. You can deworm her at home, you can pick up a deworming treatment while at the pet store. When she is six weeks of age, she will be old enough for her first vaccines, so make her an appointment with a vet to get those done. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do recommend brushing your cat's teeth on a semi-weekly basis to help maintain healthy teeth and gums, and it's never too early to start on good habits! The most important thing to do is use a pet toothpaste, as their fluoride requirements are different than ours. I would choose a flavor that she likes. Good luck!
