My dog's eye is swollen and puffy after dental cleaning. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 45 lbs

My dogs right under eye has been a little puffy since last night. Wednesday she had a dental cleaning and was under anesthesia and everything was fine. She had bloodwork too that was fine. I gave her a Benadryl to see if that helps. It doesn’t seem to be bothering her and it doesn’t look red if I look around at it. What could be wrong? First photo is last might, second is right now. The third is her face normally.

Hello. It looks like an infection or some inflammation has become seated in the tissues under that eye. It is impossible to say if it has anything to do with the dentistry, but comparing the 2nd photo to the first, it does look like the swelling has gone down a bit. If the swelling does not seem to be bothering Penny at all, I would first try just applying a very warm compress to the swelling 2-3 times a day for 10 minutes at a time. This may help to resolve things over the weekend. If not, have her looked at by your vet incase antibiotics are needed . Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
