Dog drinking, eating more, diarrhea, itchy. Should I go to ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 85 lbs

My dogs appetite has increased significantly in the last few days, he has diarrhea, after he poops he rubs his butt on the ground which is not normal behavior for him, he's been drinking a lot more water than usual and is itchy. Do you think he has worms? He is about a month late on his dewormer medicine. I've checked his poop and no worms are visible, and the soonest his usual vet can see him is Saturday 10-27. I'm worried about him. Should I take him to an emergency vet tomorrow?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is a good idea to take Stitch into an emergency vet sooner rather than later in my opinion. To be honest, the increased drinking and appetite worry me more than the diarrhea and itching. That combination can signal diabetes (needs attention right away) or a different hormone disease called Cushing’s disease (is inconvenient but will need to be managed). The diarrhea and itching are another layer of complication which may or may not be related to the other two. Either way, I’d say ER vet tomorrow is ideal, though since he is clearly eating and drinking, it is not wrong to wait the extra 24 hours to see your regular vet. Best wishes to you and Stitch!
