How to stop my dog from eating bones on walks and acting aggressive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 22 lbs

Hello, My dog finds bones outside while going for walks. Initially i try my hardest to get the bones out of his mouth and he growls very aggressively. If i am unsuccessful, i hate to say it but i have to hit him and it makes him more angry. He does not understand I’m trying to save him.Tonight during our last walk for the night, he found A huge pork chop bone. I’m so scared that one day I won’t be able to get the bone and he may get seriously hurt or even worst have internal issues. Plz help : (

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfortunately, this is a tough one. My two thoughts are: trades and avoidance. Trades Carry a really desirable treat (whatever he loves) with you on the walk. Give the command “sit” and give him the treat. Do this occasionally throughout the walk. Then, if you come to the bone, immediately tell him to sit and offer the treat. Hopefully he thinks it’s preferable to the bone and drops it. Avoidance If possible, can we go a different route? Stick to sidewalks where you can see things more easily? Or consider a comfort fit basket muzzle for walks that doesn’t allow him to eat anything. There are cute shapes or you can decorate and bedazzle them to make them look less scary. Best wishes to you and Blanco!
