My cat is still biting his tail and losing hair after flea treatment.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 10 lbs

For 3 months my cat has been biyting and running away from his tail. We figured out he had fleas and treated it, but he is still hiding, hissing, and growling his tail. He has also lost a lot of weight due to not eating much. The hair on the sides of his body had become almost non existant. I dont know what to do. What could be causing this problem, and how do i treat it?

Some cats can be allergic to flea bites, and thus still experience symptoms even once the fleas are treated until they are healed. It's a good idea to bring Levi into your vet for a complete exam to rule out any other issues such as infections, allergies, parasites still on the body, etc that could be causing his distress. Using an Elizabethan (cone) collar or even a small t-shirt to hide the area that is irritated and bothering him may also give it a chance to rest without licking or scratching irritating it further until your vet can take a look.
