Hi, one of my puppies has diarrhea and a little bit of blood in it too. I'm worried and thinking the worst, that he may have parvo, but they got their first set of vaccinations for it. Is it possible that they can still contract it even after getting the 1st set of vaccinations? And if so does that mean the worst could happen and he may pass away or is this some sort of side effect from the vaccine?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! So a few things. 1- YES, Puppies can still get parvo virus after receiving one or more vaccines. They are not considered fully protected until they have recieved their last vaccine at or after 16 weeks of age. 2- BUT- 95% of the time, parvo will cause vomiting (usually severe and repetitive), severe lethargy, loss of appetite, and THEN diarrhea with or without blood. If Ben is happy, active, eating, and not vomiting, it is very UNlikely to be parvo. If you ARE seeing those signs listed above, head to you regular vet or an emergency vet immediately. Prompt treatment of parvo is key. (80+% of dogs who are treated will survive). Other (way more common) things that can cause bloody diarrhea: -intestinal parasites (worms, coccidia, giardia) - colitis - this inflammation of the colon can be caused by stress (from a recent vet visit/vaccine even), new food or treat, or eating something naughty (plant, bird poop, trash, etc.) If Ben is otherwise happy and eating, you can give it a day or two to see if it goes away on its own. If not, see your vet and bring a stool sample to help figure out what is going on and get the right treatment. Hope this helps and best wishes to you and Ben!
