Female cat straining, bleeding, pain, and vaginal bulge. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ocicat | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 6 lbs

My cat sat in her litter box trying unsuccessfully to urinate, has been straining hunched over, is coming to me meowing and panting, she will let out growls of pain. I saw some blood When she was she was licking. When she was straining, I saw something reddish bulge from.her vaginal opening. I called an emergency vet and left a message and was text back that since my cat is female, it is not likely a blockage which I worried about but a severe bladder infection and could wait until office hours

I would still be concerned that something serious could be going on. It’s true that cats it is rare for a female cat to develop a urinary obstruction but it is not completely unheard of. I’m also wondering if there’s a chance she could be pregnant and having difficulty with labor. I think you should contact the emergency clinic again or call another hospital to have Luna seen.
