My 8-month lab is slow after playing. Should I see a vet or rest him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 13 days old | 70 lbs

My dog was playing fetch yesterday and chase with a few other dogs. At the end he was walking very slowly and calmly. He's an 8 month old lab so this is very uncharacteristic. His temperament seems fine (happy, eating, tail wagging) and he's not limping. I waited a day and today he ran about 10 min with the other dogs and same thing. Slow walk, preferring to lay with a stick instead of play. I'm guessing he strained something? Should I bring him to vet or reduce activity for now and see?

I would wait for a few days to see the vet. Give him rest, leash walking only, no jumping and running and observe whether he is getting better. Watch for limping, pain and swelling. If he gets better and is back to his own self within a few days, then it probably was a sprain and he will be fine. If he deteriorates, starts to limp or does not get better, then you will need to take Kase to your vet for an exam.
