Can homemade food replace expensive prescription for dog crystals?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 23 lbs

My 3 year old 23lb. male corgi has a history of developing cystine crystals in his urinary tract and was put on Hill's U/D canned food as a result. I have been reading online about alkaline diets and was wondering if we could prepare food for him at home that would be sufficient in preventing the formation of the cystine crystals. The food he is on currently is very expensive ($42-$46 every 12 days). How can we determine the correct amount of homemade food or his weight and breed?
