My active dog is drowsy after a long hike. Is it pain or vet time?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 42 lbs

My dog seems drowsy and not himself. He's a 3 legged border collie who is very active. He ate and drank last night. But today seems very sleepy and we did go on a large hike yesterday and maybe his leg is in pain but I'm not certain . Just curious if I should take him to the vet immediately

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If lethargy is the only sign you are seeing at the moment, I would continue to monitor him for now as this could be just a transient thing due to discomfort from a long hike for example, among other possibilities. However, if this continues throughout the day or he develops any other signs such as inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea, have him evaluated then. Good luck!
